My BattleTech Box set arrived today. Essentially its a reprint of the original starter box set but slightly prettified.
Released originally in 1984, BattleTech enjoyed a quite a bit of popularity in the late 80′s and early 90′s, producing expansions, books (apparently more than 100), computer games, a collectable card game and an animated TV show. Essentially, players play Battle Robots which beat the stuffing out of other Battle Robots. There is a Role-Playing element as well, which helps maintain interest.
This new release comes with books, quick start guides, 24 plastic miniatures, 2 completely crappy budget conscious dice, a large political map and 2 gaming maps. Looking through the set, I have to admit this version is quite a bit more glossy than the original box set, which is what you’d expect of course. The pictures have been updated, the book is in colour and the maps and poster are good quality. Sadly, gone are the embarrassingly bad early 1980′s illustrations from the original (replaced by pictures of painted models). There was something about the 80′s interpretation of the future that was hugely amusing (and vaguely reassuring…). Apparently, if the artists are to be believed, flares make a huge comeback in 3364 A.D.
For those of you interested in playing this game on your computer, you can check out the Open Source version of the game called Megamek.
