Growing up, one of my absolute favourite games was Ultima V – Warriors of Destiny. The scope of the game, the large maps, the magic system, story, characters, etc, made it one of the most enthralling games of my childhood. Some recent research into the game (sparked by the release of the iPhone game Perilar, which is actually quite good…) led me to find that it has fallen into Abandonware. Some quick looking around led me to a site that offers Ultima V (amongst other games) for free download. The download site also includes the manuals, spell book and large maps of Britannia as well.
Playing it again for the first time in about 15 years its startling how far graphics have come along, but how far behind story and playability has fallen. Within 20 minutes I was completely lost in the world of Britannia fighting evil skeletons and orcs trying to remember all the cool stuff I used to know how to do (oh yeah, and trying to find Lord British too…).
For a game that is 20 years old this year, it is still remarkably playable and fun. I really wish someone would re-do it, and not just in Dungeon Siege, but for real…
