Zombieville USA beginner’s strategy guide

zombieville_titleZombieville USA is one of those simple to play magical games that can distract you for hours doing the same repetitive thing over and over. It’s hard to say whether the charm stems from playing a trucker’s cap, flannelet shirt wearing redneck hillbilly shooting zombies with rocket launchers and flame throwers, or whether its the well designed control scheme or the simple but effective graphics. Whatever it is, it has deserved its place in the top of the game charts in the App Store for some time now.

Having played Zombieville USA quite a bit over the last little while, I have developed some strategies for getting through to level 20 in a hurry that I am going to share with you. I will also include some basic stuff for people who haven’t played the game before (because some of it took me a little while to work out at first…).

The Controls

First and foremost, there’s not a lot to control in game. You press on one of the arrows to turn and walk in that direction, tap between the arrows to shoot and tap the ammo icon to cycle through your weapons. Essentially that is it.

Houses

As you wander through the zombie filled streets of the game, you will find lots of unguarded houses filled with ammo and money just laying around for anyone to take. So, if you see a house with it’s lights on, tap the door when you are nearby to enter it.

While you are in the house, you will find that zombies like to mill around out the front. You can leave facing either direction by hitting the arrow of the corresponding direction that you want.

On to the strategy…

Choose the right weapon for the job

The first 3 levels or so can be completed with your handgun easily. You should probably think about getting a shotgun by at least level 5. The shotgun starts with a low effectiveness range, but quickly turns into a long range death dealing boom stick as you upgrade it. The shotgun is the only weapon I buy until level 15 at which point I consider buying the sub-machine guns.

The rocket launchers are only useful much later on. They also suck monumentally at close range (obviously) and as you can’t outrun zombies, if you get stuck cycling through the weapons while you are being bitch slapped, it’s going to hurt. Probably a lot…

The chain saw and flame thrower though – awesome…

Limit your weapons!

As you loot houses you often find ammo in them. You will only find ammo for the weapons that you currently own. As the shotgun is the most effective weapon, only having the shotgun in your aresenal will mean that you only collect shells and pistol rounds. This makes sure that you don’t have to juggle ammunition in the middle of a fight.

Ideally you should be able to get through to at least level 15 without needing to get anything more than the best shotgun.

Take the long way to the end

As you get paid for each zombie kill, it’s a good idea to take the long way to the end. Cycle back once in a while to clean up any zombies that may have popped up behind you. You can also stand still for a while to let more zombies come to you. This is a good way to make sure you get your uber shotgun quickly.

Know your zombies

The everyday garden variety zombie

zombieville_01

This zombie can be outrun at early levels and takes a couple of hits with your pistol or one hit at the right range with your shotgun to go down. You will see a lot of these guys…

The scary super fast pale green zombie

zombieville_02

Appearing at around 5th level you will start to see the pale green super fast zombie. This zombie comes at you with great speed, but hitting it with ANYTHING will take it down immediately…

The scary strong but slow dark green zombie

zombieville_00

Appearing after level 10ish, this zombie is slow and strong. Even with a maxed out shotgun at close range you will need to hit him a couple of times at least…
