I wandered into the ABC shop on the weekend to pick myself up a sonic screwdriver and was amazed by the range of Timelord merchandise available. The two things which appealed to me most was a packet of Dr Who Top Trumps and the Dr Who Annual.
For those of you not exposed to these UK imports, Top trumps is a card game where each card in the deck has various statistical ratings, and you want to win hands by trumping the others on a given stat value. For example, with my Marvel Comic Heroes pack, the stats are Height, Intelligence, Strength, Speed, Agility, and Fighting Skills.
I draw Kingpin who at 198 cm is a big boy and call height as the trump as opposed to his strength of 30. If my opponent ( or any number) drew the silver surfer (height 190, strength 46), Kingpin would trump on height and win.
Trumps was a game I played as a boy and am a bit nostalgic about, it can be used for anything from Cars to sport to Warhammer. It is also a good gift as its easy to understand, requires no batteries and is usually between $10 and $20.
Now, of course, you can play trumps online. Once you register the games are very easy to play, especially to any fan of the movies, and the interface is friendly and fast loading.
After playing a game or two you may find yourself buying a pack if you see one.
Annuals are also a relic of my youth. My first was Rupert Bear [no relation to the editor of this blog, ed] when I traveled to England with My parents. After that I bought whichever ones I could. I bought Battle Action Force every, year, The Beano if it came out, and whatever I could find in 2nd hand shops, from Dan Dare to Bunty. Anything. A comic Annual was not just comics, it also had games, fact files, and short stories. In the UK these were meant to come out at Christmas, I bought the Dr Who one last year as a stocking filler with its 3D cover. Unfortunately here in Australia they usually turned up around Easter, but I bought them always and still have them safely stored in my attic.
