500x_tvthemes1The good people over at io9.com have compiled a chart documenting the rise and fall of various themes within sci-fi and fantasy TV shows since the 1970′s. The five trends documented are Aliens & Mutants, Robots, Magic, Space Travel and Time Travel. The chart provides and excellent overview derived from 300 shows showing how trends have come and gone.

What is most interesting is the boom in the 1990′s in all trends investigated, and the apparent fall thereafter. You can also see a huge drop in sci-fi oriented content throughout the 1980′s. This might have been casually related to a lot of topics such as those listed above being campaigned against in various forms.
