The Dice of Doom Roleplaying Game Campaign Hooks: 002

d20Once again we bring you a collection of story and plot hooks to help out when running your roleplaying games. This week we focus on fantasy roleplaying games. We are preparing more hooks for modern, science fiction and Cthulhu campaigns which we will release next week. As always, if you would like to contribute ideas, please leave them in the comments below – we’re sure your fellow GM’s will appreciate it.

  • A rival NPC in the town that the party is residing in is rumoured to have begun dabbling in the darker arts and has gone so far as to start trying to acquire forbidden items. When unexplained phenomena start to occur, you begin to question, just how deep have they been dabbling?
  • A group of flagellant monks appears in the town where the party are staying. After a large procession they are greeted warmly by the local religious leader(s) who describes them as a shining beacon of the god’s favour and grace. That night screams break out throughout the town. Upon investigation it turns out the monks aren’t all that they seem and might be very dangerous indeed. When questioned, the local religious leader(s) tell the party there is nothing to worry about, and that everything is as it should be…
  • The Special Magic Item belonging to the King legitimizing his rule has been lost! When summoned before the king he says “Please, dear adventurers, retrieve it! You can have your choice of magic item from the Royal Vaults upon your return!” When asked what the item actually is, he replies with “I can’t remember what the item is, but I think it is round, golden, and burns anyone who touches it who isn’t the King…”
  • Items are disappearing from local homes. Anything that is shiny in any way is the target. People are reporting seeing a small blurry red thing shortly before or after noticing the item is lost. There is frequently the smell of sulphur left behind…
  • The party come across a combat – a nobleman and his retinue have been ambushed by brigands, killing all but one of his bodyguards and leaving him badly wounded and barely conscious.Upon investigation (after chasing the remaining brigands away or killing them) it turns out that the nobleman is the only heir of [insert very important character here who died only recently]. He has been travelling back home after being away for some time and has only just learnt of his father’s death. If the party take him home safely they are promised a rich reward. After travelling with the young noble the party is given clues that he might not be who he seems, but might taking advantage of the fact that the young son has been away for a long time. Is this an attempt to place an impostor in a very important position? If so, who is behind it, and what happened to the real son?

This collection of hooks has been collated by RupertG, Dwayne (from the podcast) and JRR.
