Play a New RPG Month Update

PANRPG LogoIt’s less than a week till the official start of Play a New RPG Month so I thought I’d write an update on what has been going on in preparation for the month. It has been pretty humbling (and downright awesome) to see people that we don’t know discussing PANRPG independently of our involvement. This means that the idea is spreading, and we couldn’t be happier.

The Angry DM wrote an excellent piece on why you should play a new RPG in October and included some excellent tips on how to have a successful month. You really should read this if you are planning on running the month, or are even just interested in what it is all about.

The Roving Band of Misfits were kind enough to have me on their Level Up podcast to discuss the reasons behind starting the project and talk about the games the Dice of Doom gaming group have been playing over the last year as part of our 12 Games/12 Months/6 GMs project.

Beefgriller has written about the games he’s likely to play over on his Elf Steaks Halfling Bacon blog.

We’d like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has taken the time to tweet about the project, post it on forums and take the time to try and convince their group it is a great idea (a task easier in some groups than others…). We’ve seen a huge explosion in the number of people discussing PANRPG on twitter and in forums. If your group is doing something special for it, let us know! We love to hear about what other groups are playing, so please drop us a line. By letting us know what your group is playing, your character could win a set of ‘in-game’ steak knives specially created for the game you are playing…

Let us know if you have blogged about the project and we’ll add it to the list above.

Hey, just wanted to restate what a great idea I think this is. I’ve put together a “Play a New RPG Month Pack” of ROLF! releases specifically to celebrate/promote the idea that’s on sale at RPGNow and DriveThruRPG. I also gave the idea a plug on the NUELOW Games blog: http://nuelow.blogspot.com/2011/09/october-is-play-new-rpg-month.html

I hope this finds lots of support!

Yeah, this seems like a really cool idea. I think the relatively high barriers to entry in any RPG – understanding the effects of your statistics, and gameplay mechanics, and discovering by yourself what every other player takes for granted – is always a barrier to entry, given how complex RPGs can be. Something like this has a good shot in spreading word about the less-well-known ones…
