Dice of Doom Podcast 042: What should be in the Roleplaying Classic Collection?

For this episode we have only asked ourselves one question. And then we talk non-stop for around 45 minutes on it. No really. We just found it that interesting. The question you ask? If you were Professor of Roleplaying Games at some awesome university that had an RPG Dept, what would be the core reading texts? What would make up the Roleplaying Game Canon, so to speak.

This is our version of the canon – let us know what you would include in the comments below.

Guys. Guys. You failed to mention Gamma World. I know you didn’t have a lot of fun with the 4e version, but you can’t deny its place in RPG canon – first sci-fi, first post apocalyptic RPG, and it’s still around. AND I feel that Spirit of the Century is way too new to put it in any kind of canon. If anything, it belongs in Paul’s “Last week of the semester, what’s going to define RPGs going forward” classes. Careful Rupert, your bias is showing. ;-) Great discussion though, I really enjoyed it. Glad you guys are back.

Well, as we said in the show, everyone will have a different set of games in their list ;)

To be honest with you, Gamma World was not even brought up in our pre-recording chat so it is quite likely we just forgot about it. I don’t think we would have included it anyway as it is competing with some pretty extraordinary games from that era.

We have has a few people disagree about SotC. Most have actually been saying we should have included Fudge instead as coming before it.

And yes, it is good to be back :)

Forgot to ask – is that the only change you would make to the Canon?

Fair call. I could possibly be convinced that the original Gamma World deserves a spot – possibly.

My recollection however is that Traveller predates Gamma World at least as far as publishing date goes, and that’s still around as well. It’s not post-apocalyptic but it’s sci-fi/space opera so I don’t think we ignored the genre completely.

    That’s what I thought. Others disagree…

And yes, we shall. But that’s kind of the point… :)
